Preparing for a trip to Paris
What I already knew about Paris - Hotel Chevalier (hotel rooms have balconies, terrific views, emotional bullying) - Swann’s Way (information probably outdated) - A Moveable Feast (Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein are dead, so my trip can be nothing like this) Sources I consulted to learn about Paris - 2 Days in Paris (showed city full of mildewy bathrooms and heavy-handed characterization) -...

Evaluating one's place
This is the fourth of six semesters in my grad program. Each one begins with my thinking, “Oh, I am way behind, maybe I am actually pretty stupid, I don’t know any of this at all and have nothing to say,” except, with each successive semester, fewer weeks pass before I think, “Nope, these other people aren’t so hot,” and start talking.

Cornel West has some reasons to be upset with Barack Obama. Maybe he will deliver them in verse, if you click ‘play’? [via] UPDATE: Barack must have seen this video and said, “Oh shit!” RESPONSE TO THE REPUBLICAN RESPONSE TO THE UPDATE: Here

King on love, politics, and cultural elitism
Agape is more than romantic love, agape is more than friendship. Agape is understanding, creative, redemptive, good will to all men. It is an overflowing love which seeks nothing in return. So that when one rises to love on this level, he loves men not because he likes them, not because their ways appeal to him, but he...

MLK, health care
Onto other business, it sort of pissed me off that no one talked about MLK yesterday, aside from stupid jokes. (A Coming to America clip posted to Twitter? Seriously, fuck you.) Must I start a “Put MLK Back in MLK Day” campaign? Should I write a newspaper editorial about the war on MLK Day? Let’s take a moment and think about how the health care legislation, which seems as...

Brooklyn advice
My 23-y-o sister has decided to pack a suitcase and move from Atlanta to Brooklyn. Any recommendations for an affordable and relatively safe neighborhood/area she should look at? No advice is too basic. Do you have any leads?

2009 crushes
- Meghan McCain: She is vapid but a looker. She communicates an earnestness both with her appearance and in her (nonsensical) punditry that suggests she’d try really hard to make you happy and that she’d put up with anything if you kept her feeling appreciated. But I don’t mean this as a cut-down; she seems sweet. Her voluptuousness and emptyheadedness put the best possible...
